Platinum and Converter Recycling - A "Mature" Industry?
I occasionally hear from those who feel, because they don't know how to market, that catalytic converter recycling is a "mature" industry. By this, they mean that they've probably called a couple of muffler shops or maybe even visited a few in person and, because someone is "already picking up their converters", that there's no opportunity left.
It now appears that the primary platinum producing and refining country in the world, South Africa, is "evaluating" the viability of establishing a catalytic converter industry. According to Platinum Group Metals: Latest News , the potential exists to recover half a million or so ounces of PGMs annually.
So, although converter recycling may be somewhat more advanced (in terms of percentage of potential units being recycled), according to our USGS, slightly more than half of the total available are collected. And in the rest of the world, it is basically an industry in its infancy.
