Another Potential Platinum Recycling Niche

Earlier this year in The Recycling Entrepreneur Newsletter I told you of a new potential recycling opportunity opening up in the platinum field - that of O2 sensors.

While that opp is still in the development stages, it looks like other marginal (low-grade) platinum scrap sources are becoming viable for recycling. This is good news as it has positive indications that the O2 sensors will soon be aggressively recycled - something which is not being done now.

According to Johnson-Matthey, major investments have been made on both coasts to establish refineries to recover platinum from PC hard drives as a profitable platinum recycling niche. No figures are provided as to the amount of platinum contained in these devices, but we'll keep you informed of any further news, including whether this will become a profit center for us recycling entrepreneurs to capitalize upon.

Filling the Surplus Niche by Keeping Your Eyes Open

When you're out 'prospecting' for scrap, especially in industrial areas, it pays to keep your eyes open. I can't tell you the number of times I came across undervalued metals and materials while searching for the stuff I was interested in, in scrap piles and recycling bins.

If you're out there beating the bushes for high-value scrap, as taught in "Recycling For Profit", always be on the lookout for other stuff being thrown away or sold for a song which is high-value to the right buyer.

Here's a good example: Filling the Surplus Niche . I have an old friend who located thousands of linear feet of valuable stainless sheeting in Wyoming - it was unused in a reconstruction project at a refinery and they had used it to line a drainage ditch! This is exactly the type of situation which happens every day in every part of the world.

So always be open to learning what has value and to whom, and you will eventually come across materials in your daily business activities which present you with a profit windfall.
