Frequently Asked Questions

1. Should I refine my own scrap for the highest profit?

Answer:  NO!  My experience has taught me that refining, for the recycling entrepreneur, is an interesting hobby but a terrible business.  Frankly, you couldn't hope to compete with the professional refiner who has made very expensive investments in equipment and experience.

Even if you do refine your scrap materials yourself, who are you going to  sell the metals to? How much will you have to discount it to move it? Will you have enough metal to really get a competitive price? And why even bother when you can frequently get 100% or more of the precious metal value by selling through one or more of the avenues I reveal?

I provide a lot of information in "Recycling For Profit" on the specifics of refining various scrap materials.  I do so with the sole intent of educating you as to exactly how labor and time intensive the processes are.  My hope is that I will be effective in dissuading you from doing it yourself.

You can also find lively discussions in our recycling discussion forum on this fascinating hobby. But remember, many of the very profitable types of scrap you might choose to work with won't require any special processing - you'll simply be picking them up at one location and reselling them cleanly and quickly to a willing buyer to whom they greater value - whether locally or online through an auction site such as eBay.

I'll show you how and where to do this; how to find the best buyers, and exactly how to maximize you income by doing so.

2. What is the BEST opportunity?

Answer: The best opportunity for you is not necessarily the best for me or anyone else.  You need to decide what interests you the most and whether you are located in a good area for that recycling field.  This is exactly why I educate you on what I feel are the most profitable areas - so you have complete control over your destiny and success.

3. Can I make money with precious metals prices being as low as they are today?

Answer: Absolutely! As a matter of fact, the opportunities are probably better than ever.  I  used to compete with national buyers who would send employees out on buying trips, paying top dollar for scrap.  Today's prices pretty much prohibit these companies from incurring that kind of expense - the result being much less competition for scrap.  Also, many small and medium size processors/refiners have been forced out of business over the past twenty years.  The scrap film company I ran for years is but one example of this.

So get out there and develop a clientele - when prices start trending upward (as they MUST in the future) you will be able to compete with ANYONE in your area!

4. I don't have much money to get started.  How much will I need to invest?

Answer: This depends on what area you'll be working.  If you decide to start buying gold and platinum from the public or the dental field, at the least you'd need a good triple-beam OHaus scale (under $200) and a few hundred in ready cash to make purchases with.  The beauty of my system is that you'll take your profits as frequently as DAILY, and be able to put your days profits back into more scrap.

...or you can collect various items in your community, and sell them for quick cash within days or weeks, doubling and tripling your money each time you sell!

I will also show you (if you're in the US and currently have a steady job) how to finance your business from the tax savings you will accrue by being a home-based entrepreneur.

5. Is this a ploy to get me to send YOU my scrap materials?

Answer: NO! I am neither a major buyer, processor, or refiner of any type of scrap - nor do I want to be!  I strongly suggest that you sell to a well established and reputable company as close to you as possible or even online for the greatest and quickest profits. So don't send me anything other than a letter of thanks for this opportunity!

6. You say you've been recycling for over 25 years. Does this mean you've been doing ALL these businesses for that period?

Answer: I have had an active career in the transportation industry, health care fields, and publishing during this period as well. I remain an active recycler today - I just know enough and have enough clients that I can pick and choose how and when I devote my recycling time to the most profitable ones.

As I learn of new opportunities, I also "get my hands wet" by trying new recycling niches to determine if they meet my standards for ease of entry, profitability, and universal applicability.

7. How recent is your information?
