In this issue: 1. Announcements & Commentary 2. The Cell Phone Support Group Update 3. Have You Looked at the Metals Markets Lately? ****************************************************************************** THIS IS AN OPT-IN Mailing List. You are receiving this issue because you or someone using your email address joined our mailing list. All requests are kept on file for verification. Removal instructions are at the close of this mailing. ****************************************************************************** 1. Announcements & Commentary Welcome, if you’re a new subscriber to our publication. Welcome back, if you’ve been a faithful reader for some time. If you’re a new reader, I just want to let you know all the back issues are archived for your reading enjoyment at: http://recyclebiz.com/the_recycling_entrepreneur_newsletter.html I'll reveal my major announcement, and then we'll cover some recycling business. First off, the new manual, entitled "Recycling For Profit", is in its final stages of editing and will be released on January 19, 2004. This is the first MAJOR update to "High-Profit Recycling" since 1995 and brings much of the old information up to date. What's new? First, LOTS of web links to resources you should have to build your recycling business. New and extensive lists of buyers, processors, refiners, informational resou rces, topic experts, etc, etc. Although you shouldn't expect lots of new graphics, there will be some new supplemental ones. NEW information on environmental regulations which may impact your efforts and how to benefit from them while they stymie your competition. Changes in scrap markets which benefit you but frustrate others. Little-known techniques and niche markets that are currently being completely ignored, creating great profit opportunities for YOU! The latest developments in cell phone recycling - new buyers and charts and spreadsheets comparing their buy prices. How to research and find buyers for just about everything worth recycling. Using online auctions to maximize your profits, or just to research the value of items you come across. A number of resources where you can learn the economics, history, and future of the metals and recycling markets. Professional organizations you might consider benefiting from. Let's face it, the basics of most recycling niches have not changed a lot, so you're not going to learn revolutionary new businesses (other than phone recycling), but you will be exposed to lots of evolutionary changes which have occurred in the past 10 years. Ones w hich you will not learn anywhere else, or would cost you substantially in terms of hours of research - IF you could find them. The price of the new manual is going to be $97.00, but I am going to make the new manual and CD available to you at a discount of almost 70% - but only for the first 250 people to order. This is a prepublication price, and since this newsletter goes out to ov er 9,400 subscribers, I expect to have these sold within hours. The price for the first 250 smart purchasers is $30 for the complete new manual and CD, with a $3.85 charge for Priority Mail shipping within the US and $11.00 for outside the US. Your order will be fulfilled in the order it is received, starting January 20. You will also receive download instructions so you can view the files online on or after that date. Of course, you will be entitled to any future updates online for free, but I simply will NOT offer my usual refund policy at this price. If, after browsing all the past issues of this newsletter and the discussion forum, you're not satisfied that I'm for real or $30 is too much to risk without a guarantee, don't order. If, on the other hand, you've been holding back because $75 has just been too much, you'll NEVER get another chance to obtain this unique information at anywhere near this price. Here are the links: For US delivery: http://www.netofficetoolbox.com/app/javanof.asp?MerchantID=20833&ProductID=1632447 For anywhere outside the US: http://www.netofficetoolbox.com/app/javanof.asp?MerchantID=20833&ProductID=1632450 By the way, I've added PayPal to the order form, so you can pay from your US checking account if you wish. Remember, if you already own the manuals you can get a new printed version indefinitely at this price, but if you are a NEW purchaser, you're going to have to be one of the first 250 to take advantage of this offer. Onward. Have you looked at the metals markets lately? I w ill address this topic more thoroughly further on in this issue, but go here for a few minutes and check the end of year gold, silver, and platinum prices and trend charts for 2003. http://www.kitco.com Back already? Did anything catch your eye? Cogitate on this while you're reading the rest of the newsletter, because I'll elaborate shortly. But I will give you my conclusion, which will not be a surprise to you if you've been reading my commentaries for any amount of time. The changes we've seen in the metals markets are portentous. I cannot help but believe that we're going to see further changes in our economy which do not bode well for you and me if we do not have alternate sources of income and the wisdom to keep as much of our hard-earned cash out of the government's hands as is legally possible. We, as a civilization, are living on borrowed money, and it cannot continue. And if you think that the forces which oppose free societies by attacking the symbols of those societies are go ing to limit their destructive activities to murdering innocent people, you're dead wrong. It is a well-known secret that the seeds of economic warfare are being sown as we speak, and the results can be just as painful and terrifying as any dirty bomb or weapon of mass destruction. The difference is that you won't hear it from the press, nor on your evening news, and the government is certainly not going to give you fair warning. I will save the details for the next issue, but spend some time studying 1929 and its decades-long effect on the US. Don't think it cannot happen again. Prepare yourself for the fact that it is in process now, and whether it will be as bad as those times not-so-long-ago, or not, is irrelevant. Get out of debt and set up a system to make alternative income, whether through recycling or any other legal, honorable, and ethical means - because the chances are you'll NEED it at some point. 2. The Cell Phone Support Group Update This program is meant for those who already own a copy of "The Recycler's Library" or have purchased the chapter on "Disposables" which details the cell phone recycling business. If you have not yet done so, and are interested (why else would you be reading this newsletter?) in this opportunity, NOW would be a good time to lock in a copy (of either publication) at current prices before the 19th of January, when the Cell Phone chapter's price will go to $47 and the new manual & CD, "Recycling for Profit", will go to $97.00. If you're REALLY going to do something to better your situation this year, take advantage of my offer at the start of the newsletter - you will NEVER have the chance to obtain this wealth of knowledge at this price again. And once the 250 advance copies are gone, the order link w ill disappear. Of course, if you already have a copy of "Mining Main Street" or "High-Profit Recycling", you are entitled to FREE downloads of the new manual, and you can order a new printed version with CD-ROM indefinitely. I have had LOTS of interest in cell phone recycling simply because it is so obvious that this is a business in its infancy. As growth occurs and is spurred by new government and industry initiatives, fortunes will be made by those getting in early. Frankly, I would have paid thousands gladly if I'd had access to a recycling expert in the late 70's who would have advised me about how to best take advantage of the best recycling opportunity at that time - catalytic converters. I decided that if another life-changing opportunity arose in my lifetime, I would be the one to not only profit from it, but to guide others and share my experience and opinions to help others. M y new cell phone recyclers support group is the result of that determination. I will give you a heads-up preview, and you can determine if you're interested. This will be a paid membership program specifically for serious cell phone recyclers. Frankly, this is a new business and everyone, including myself, is learning through trial and error. So if you're looking for a program or system which will be 'plug and play', telling you step-by-step how to succeed and make a lot of money in this business, there isn't any - not from me or anyone else. I do believe that I have a lot of accumulated experience which will be of value to the members, but I am NOT going to layout a roadmap to success which must be followed. I believe I have given people a good head start on how to 'get your feet wet' in the report - at least enough for those really serious to get started. The membership program will be strictly interactive. It is a method for people to share their experiences, not to learn from me alone, because there are probably some of my readers who may be further advanced than I. Because participation is required, I will only be offering membership on a monthly basis, and it will be $10.00 per month. I will not bill on a bimonthly, six month, or annual basis, and if a member chooses not to participate and share their experiences they will not be invited to participate the next month. Nor will they be able to join six months down the road and get access to the previous six months' discussions and ideas. Each month's information will be separate and not cumulative. Newbies, however, will be able to buy in at any time by paying the previous dues which others have already paid. Frankly, I don't care if I have 10 active members or 1,000, it w ill be a limited program, and I will reserve the right to terminate it at any time I feel it is no longer productive or the participation decreases to the point that I no longer have the motivation to continue it. This is why I'm going to do it on a month-to-month basis. There will be some other details to be finalized later, but I'm planning for a startup date of February 15. I am laying the groundwork for this program as well as finalizing the complete revision of my other manuals so I w ill have more time to devote to this new program. As far as current help with your business, where are you in the process? Have you collected any phones in your area? Asked any neighbors, friends, or coworkers if they've any phones they'd give you? Run any local ads to buy phones? Taken ANY action at all??? The best advice I can give you is to download the latest version of the "Disposables" chapter and start using the information NOW. Do the simple steps before you get grandiose ideas about rolling out fundraisers to large organizations. Without some basic experience under your belt, you'll only get yourself in over your head when you make commitments to an organization and then cannot follow through. I can't believe the number of people who've asked me who "the big boys" are selling to, because they're going to cut out the middleman and go straight to the market makers who will pay them top dollar for their phones. Frankly, I don't know, and I wouldn't tell if I did. Not when the response I get when I ask if they've collected ANY phones so far is "No, I'm only going to deal with the end buyers for top dollar". If this is your plan, first thing you need to do to cut out the middleman is get yourself 50,000 to 100,000 used phones. THEN (and ONLY then) you'll have the bargaining power you need to do what you want. Until then, try making a decent income by developing your local market - there is more business within 50 miles of your home than you'll be able to handle when starting out. Put the delusions of grandeur on hold until your expertise and track record prove you're capable of handling the volume. If you can't (or won't) collect 100 old, unwanted phones from your neighbors, coworkers, business associates, and friends, you can't really expect to impress a buyer who deals in lots of ten thousand at a time, can you? If you are thinking you're just going to pay your ten bucks a month and Scott's going to hold your hand and teach you everything you need to do to be successful, this ain't gonna happen! This will be a learning facility for everyone involved, including me. We're going to teach one another and contribute to one another's success, or it isn't going to last long. I have now included a copy of a spreadsheet, developed by one of my customers, comparing phone prices from the five current buyers in case you haven't gotten it yet. It is available in the download area for those already having purchased either the "Recycler's Library" or the "Disposables" chapter. Any revisions and updates will be found there as well - and I would suggest you check that area in the next few days if you're at all interested in recycling cell phones for profit. Although I have gotten lots of interest in this program, I would appreciate it if you'd send me a short email at: fones@recyclebiz.com and simply put "I'm interested" in the subject line. I will put your email address on a special mailing list so when everything is finalized you'll receive your invitation. 3. Have You Looked at the Metals Markets Lately? Ok, when you went to http://kitco.com and checked the charts, did you notice any interesting trends? I've been warning that the time was coming when we'd be seeing dramatic moves in commodities prices ,especially in the precious metals, which are a bellweather indicator. The interesting thing is that these recent moves are not dramatic to the press, even the economic press, which downplays the value of the precious metals. The amount of publicity garnered by the recent rises in silver, gold, and especially platinum is miniscule. Yet big things are starting to happen. There will be continued volatility, and they will continue to rise in in an erratic manner because that is the way markets work. But these moves are being paralleled by many other metals and commodities, especially industrial commodities. Check out this article, which will also be found on the blog: http://www.jsonline.com/bym/new s/jan04/197212.asp?source=tmj4 Think this bodes well for recyclers? I'd say it does, but the flip side is what it says about the state of manufacturing in the US, which is truly scary. The silver lining in this cloud is that, armed with the correct information and guidance, you can weather the storms which lie ahead. Do I need to tell you how? To me, another interesting thing this article points out is how people are pretty unsophisticated about the stuff they'll try to make money on. I've known 'junkers' who have made excellent incomes, approaching 6 figures annually, who were completely unaware how much stuff they were recycling had value far in excess of what the scrapyard was paying them for it. As a matter of fact, the scrapyards were doing exactly the same thing - literally shredding stuff they could have sold for a 1,000% return instead of pennies per pound. they STILL do it, in every junkyard in every city! Being tuned in to what is happening in the scrap and recycling business gives you the insight to take these profits they're ignoring. It all boils down to what you know and then acting on it. There are profit opportunities all around you - you just need to go looking for them. Frankly, this supply situation is not going to get better. Check out J-M's predictions for future platinum supplies: http://www.platinum.matthey.com/media_room/1073296992.html Think there might be more profitable opportunities coming in the catalytic converter business, where only about 50% of the available converters in the US (which supposedly has a 'mature' converter recycling industry) are currently recycled? Do you think you'll see people flooding into pawn shops and other precious metals buyers' locations as gold and silver climb to the point where they're doubling and tripling in price in a few months' time? I've seen it happen - I was in the midst of it happening 25 years ago - and it WILL happen at some point again. Our economy is teetering on the edge of a precipice, just awaiting the inevitable push it will get from forces in the Middle East. Get yourself into a position w here you are profiting from these turmoils which are going to happen, rather than being a victim.
